What is DTF?
DTF (Direct to Film) printing is a versatile and high-quality printing method that transfers your design onto a special film, which is then heat-pressed onto the garment. It’s great for detailed, full-colour prints on a wide range of fabrics — including cotton, polyester, and blends. DTF is especially handy for smaller runs or complex designs, and it offers a soft, durable finish that holds up well over time.
Why choose DTF?
DTF printing is a flexible, high-quality option that works beautifully across a wide range of garments — from cotton tees and polyester activewear to caps, jackets, and bags. It’s ideal for detailed, full-colour designs and smaller runs that might not suit screen printing. Unlike traditional digital methods, DTF doesn’t require pre-treatment - no vinegar smell. The result? A bright, durable finish that holds up well to washing and everyday wear.
Because the transfers are heat-pressed, you also get more freedom with placement — sleeves, pockets, and those tricky spots are no problem. If you’re after vibrant, long-lasting prints on almost any fabric, DTF is a smart, modern choice.
DTF FAQs

Can you match my brand colours with DTF?
We can get very close, but exact colour matching — like Pantone colours — isn’t guaranteed with DTF. That said, the results are usually vibrant and accurate enough for most designs. If colour consistency is super important (especially for branding), we recommend ordering a sample first so you can see how your colours will look on the final garment.
How many colours can I use with DTF?
As many as you like! DTF printing uses full-colour digital technology, so there’s no limit to how many colours you can include in your design. Easy!

What products is DTF suitable for?
Almost everything! DTF is super versatile and works on a wide range of fabrics. It’s great for cotton, polyester, blends, and even tricky items like nylon or spandex that aren’t always suitable for other print methods. That’s why we use DTF for activewear, workwear, jackets, caps, bags and more. If you’ve got something specific in mind, just ask — we’re happy to check if it’s suitable!
How long will DTF printed garments last?
With the right care, DTF prints are made to last! You can expect them to hold up well through 40+ washes — sometimes even longer. The key is in how you care for your garment: cold washes, avoiding tumble drying, and steering clear of harsh detergents will help keep your print looking fresh and vibrant for as long as possible.
Artwork also plays a role - for example, large solid areas tend to wear faster than simple text or logos. Other factors that may affect longevity are intense sun exposure and the overall quality of the fabric. But as always, a little extra care goes a long way in keeping your prints looking great!
What are the artwork requirements for DTF printing?
To get the best results with DTG, your artwork needs to be clean, high-quality, and properly formatted. Here’s what we recommend:
File Type:
- Best option: PNG with a transparent background
- Also accepted: High-res JPGs (suitable for white garments or full-coverage prints)
- Avoid: Low-res images, SVGs, and PDFs – they can lead to unexpected colour results
Resolution:
- Minimum: 150dpi
- Recommended: 300dpi
Low-resolution files may appear blurry or pixelated when printed.
File Size:
Your file should be set at the final print size. Resizing later can affect quality.
Colour Mode:
- Save your file in RGB. DTG printers convert colours to CMYK on output, but starting in RGB helps preserve vibrancy.
Backgrounds & Transparency:
- For coloured garments, transparent backgrounds are a must (no white boxes around your design!).
- On white garments, a JPG with a white background can be okay — but transparency is still preferred.
Design Simplicity
- DTG is great for detailed, full-colour artwork — including photos and gradients — but clean, bold linework will always give the best results.
- Very fine details can get lost on textured fabrics and large solid backgrounds should be avoided. Transparent, semi-transparent, and glow effects also don’t print well. To avoid unwanted halos or patchy prints, make sure these areas are converted to solid colours.
Not sure if your file will work?
No stress — we’re happy to check it for you and suggest any tweaks before printing.
